Connections returns!
Plus: Cable Ties.
Would you do me a favor? I'd like to stop talking for a minute and when I do take a look at the room you're in and, above all, at the man-made objects in that room that surround you. The television set. The lights. The phone and so on, and ask yourself what those objects do to your life just because they're there.
Those were the opening words of Connections, a BBC science education series that hit televisions in the UK in 1978 and the U.S. in 1979.
This series, created, written, and presented by science historian James Burke, aimed to explore the history of science and technology and how various discoveries and innovations throughout history are interconnected.
Burke's approach made the series special. Instead of presenting history in a linear fashion, he focused on unexpected and often surprising connections between different scientific and technological advancements. He explained how seemingly unrelated events and inventions were connected in a complex web of progress.
This connection belie the typical "great man" narrative and highlight the collaborative and cumulative nature of human progress.
Well, Connections is back! Burke has created a new series is it's available right now, on Curiosity Stream!, which you can subscribe to for as little as $3.34 a month. Ars Technica has a write up over here..
Cable Ties
Cable Ties release Time for You earlier this year, but I just discovered via Henry Rollins’ show on KCRW.1
No time to do my taxes All in aid to audits practice (?) No time to send it via post No time to change the bedsheets Or screw the lids down properly No time to cut the burnt bits off my toast I got no time, but I got time for you
Punk is about emotional content. Sure, the songs about politics and breaking stuff get all the attention, but like any other music, the best punk hit you right in the feels.
This is one of those songs.
Check Cable Ties out over here, on Bandcamp or on your favorite streaming service. (Time for You is on the All Her Plans album.)
Short post this week, as I am immersed in edits on The Great War of the Worlds (which is likely in for a title change.) More about that, including a chance to be a beta reader, after a week off for Thanksgiving in the U.S.
I’m sure the lyrics site has misheard at least one line here, and I tried to fix it. Aussie accents are hard.
