Meet James Brogan
We're just a few weeks away from Shadows of the Past's release, so I think it's time to revisit a few of the story's main characters and what makes them tick.
James Brogan: The Engineer
We'll start with James Brogan this week.
Many people think of their lives in two parts: before and after the Martian Attack in 1894. For some, it’s because they found themselves directly in the path of the aliens and their carnage. For others, it was learning that we’re not only not alone in the universe, but we’re coexisting with beings that see us as cattle.
But for James, it’s life before and after the Tesla Fire. In 1898, Nikola Tesla got his hands on one of the nuclear reactors that powered the fearsome Martian “Walkers” that led their attack. No one knows exactly how he got it or what he was trying to do, but the result was a fire that burnt down a large section of downtown New York City.
James’ father was one of the police officers called to the disaster. He died from radiation poisoning a few months later.
You’re the man of the house now. I need you to take care of your Mother... Things are going to change, and you need to be strong for her.
James mulls over his father's last words to him every day. His father was a hero, who saved the lives of a woman and her young children during the fire. But it cost him his life and left his own family exposed and unprotected. James will not let that happen again.
Now, he's a radio engineer for Edison Laboratories. He helped design and build part of the Planetary Warning System, a network of radios intended to help protect the world from future invasions. It’s New Year’s Eve, 1914, and the systems that connect New York City to the Europe have mysteriously stopped working.
