Mistaken Jingoism and a Cover Reveal
I've got a complete cover. Just need to finish the book.
On the Interesting Literature blog this week:
‘Born in the USA’ is rock music’s ‘The Road Not Taken’: perhaps of all American songs, none has been more consistently misinterpreted than the title track from Bruce Springsteen’s bestselling 1984 album.
And when we say ‘misinterpreted’, we don’t just mean people have missed the point slightly: they get the message of the song completely wrong so they think it means the opposite to what it actually means. - Interesting Literature
It might be sacrilege for a kid that went to High School in New Jersey in the 70’s, but I wasn’t a big Springsteen fan. Even with the heavy airplay he got on my favorite radio station, his sound was just too different from the thundering metal of Zeppelin and the polished prog of Genesis for my teenaged taste.
But, I found Darkness on the Edge of the Town while browsing a record store in Alabama and bought it in an acute case of homesickness. The title track hooked me, Candy’s Room reeled me in, and I started to appreciate his music. By the time I flew to Germany, I had all his albums and was even willing to admit that his version of Blinded by the Light is better than Manfred Mann’s.
The Born in the U.S.A tour made it to Frankfurt in June of 1985. A couple of the guys in my Army unit were Bruce fans, so we bought tickets and I drove us down from Giessen. (I’m always the guy with the car.)
We had “festival” seats on the grassy field of Waldstadion. We set up our blanket and a cooler of Licher Pilsner, and waited for the show to begin. Soon, three young ladies set their blanket up near us and Charlie, the extrovert in our group, wasted no time starting a conversation.
They were from the U.S.S.R and loved Bruce, especially his song about how wonderful the U.S.A. is. Of course, being primarily Russian speakers, they had a reason for misunderstanding the song.
I don’t know what Reagan’s excuse was.

While revision for The Great War of the Worlds are going slower than I’d like, I have managed to settle on a cover design.
